Ten nights

Six in the bush, four on the coast, one flight between

The commonest honeymoon we plan, and it earns the position rather than inheriting it.

Ten nights is where a honeymoon stops being efficient and starts being spacious. There is room for two safari regions or for real depth in one, and there is room for a coast that feels like a stay.

The version below splits the bush half across two regions. The variant that follows keeps it in one, and is often the better trip.

The shape

Three, three and four

  1. Days 1–3

    A Mara conservancy

Straight out from the international arrival where the flight times allow. Three nights on private land with a private vehicle: off-road driving, night drives, walking, and a cap on vehicles at a sighting that is actually enforced.

Three nights rather than two, so the second full day — the good one — actually happens.

  2. Day 4

    Move north

Morning drive, airstrip, an hour in the air, and a completely different landscape by lunchtime. This is the move that earns its cost, because what you arrive at looks nothing like what you left.

  3. Days 4–6

    Laikipia or Samburu

Laikipia for altitude and activity: walking, riding, rhino tracking on foot, night drives, and days that are cool in the middle rather than punishing.

Samburu for strangeness: red desert, doum palms, and species — Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk — that appear on no standard circuit.

Either one makes the first three nights feel like a different country, which is the whole point of moving at all.

  4. Day 7

    Fly to the coast

The second and final move. One flight, usually via Nairobi, and you are on the Indian Ocean by mid-afternoon.

  5. Days 7–10

    Four nights on the coast

Four is the right number: three feels like arriving and leaving, five starts to feel long unless doing nothing is genuinely the plan.

Nothing scheduled. If there is an anniversary date inside the trip, this is where to put it — no flights, no transfers, no 5am starts.

The variant: six nights in one place

Instead of three and three, take six nights at a single conservancy camp with a private vehicle and use full-day drives to reach country a short stay cannot.

We suggest the second one more often than couples expect, and it is very rarely regretted.

The Tanzanian version

Three or four nights in the Serengeti, one at the Ngorongoro Crater rim, then four or five on Zanzibar. The Serengeti-to-Zanzibar hop is forty minutes, which makes it the easiest bush-to-beach join in East Africa.

The Crater is worth one full day and it is heavily visited. Treat it as a day rather than a stay.
